South Sudan

Photographs taken on a site visit to a refugee camp in Bor, South Sudan, as well as areas in and around Juba. This was my first trip to South Sudan and my first time in a refugee camp.  It is also worth saying that the intention behind these images was not to exploit these women or children or their situations. It was to bear witness, to show the evidence of their existence.  All of these children wanted to be seen. To be photographed.  I am working on a self-published book with these images, hopefully to be produced by the end of this year and with proceeds from the sale of the book to be donated to one of the agencies working with refugees in the region.

This girl on the brink of womanhood blew my mind, she had such a sense of herself (& her style!) & determination in her eyes. Stunning.
This is what a refugee camp looks like at dawn, when everyone is still sleeping...
This mother in the camp at Bor was very proud of her children and asked me to take a photograph of them all. We then spent a good 45 minutes playing peek-a-boo, which the children enjoyed very much.
The boys all loved to throw hand symbols & show how strong & tough they were. But this image just looks graceful & beautiful to me.

This little boy was so happy to get his picture taken & wanted me to photograph him all on his own.
